The PhD program on Global Communication was established in 2016, and is a second-level PhD program under the first-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature. It has been selected as one of the national first-class discipline groups in foreign languages and literature. With the disciplinary characteristics of internationalization, practicality and strong foundation, the School has formed a mature innovative model for training global communication talents, which is in line with the development trend of globalization and new media, and meets the needs of training high-end international journalism and communication talents who know foreign languages, are proficient in their specialties and understand theories in the new era. 

The PhD program on Global Communication is dedicated to cultivating high-end research-oriented talents. Students are required to master solid and broad basic theories, systematic and in-depth professional knowledge, as well as corresponding skills and methods in the field of global communication, with the ability to carry out independent scientific research work and solve practical problems, and to have the ability to highly synthesize and present independent opinions on global communication research directions, and to achieve creative results. Proficiency in at least one foreign language is required, and the ability to read foreign language materials in that language proficiently, as well as a solid theoretical training and strong research skills.

The program includes the following research areas: international media and discourse studies, international journalism and international public opinion, public diplomacy and intercultural communication studies, new media and computational communication, media communication and social development, and international communication and audiovisual symbol studies in film and television. The benchmark duration of the PhD is four years. The minimum period of study must not be less than three years and the maximum period of study must not exceed six years.
